At VECECAB, our Carpentry and Joinery students are developing more than practical woodworking skills.

With support from volunteer Sjoerd, students are also receiving theory lessons and learning how to draw and design their own furniture.

Before a piece of furniture is built in the workshop, students are encouraged to think about its design, dimensions and construction. Learning to put an idea on paper helps them better understand the work they will later carry out with timber and tools.

An important part of the theory lessons is learning the metric system. Students practise working with millimetres, centimetres, decimetres and metres, as their examinations use centimetres for measurements.

Many students are more familiar with working in inches in the workshop. By learning how metric measurements work and how the different units relate to one another, they become better prepared for both their exams and more professional furniture design and construction.

By combining practical carpentry, theory, drawing, design and measurement, students are taking another important step toward becoming confident and professional craftsmen.

This is part of VECECAB’s continuing effort to strengthen vocational education and give students skills they can use to create opportunities for themselves in the future.
